Did Driver training at Aldershot after basic training, then off to Mill Hill to learn how to stick stamps on letters. Names defeat me, but best mate in Aden was Ernie. We had a great holiday in East Africa. Did meet another ex-Sapper I knew at basic trainging when I went to the 50th Anniversary of National Service at Chatham a few years ago. Driver training at Aldershot then posted to Shepherds Bush for postie training at Mill Hill. When completed, posted to BFPO 69 - Aden until demob time. Names, dates and units very wooley I'm afraid. Best mate Ernie who after a while was transfered to a new billet with me in air conditioned quarters on the RAF camp on Steamer Point. Had a great time. Including drunken parties in the Sea Mail parcel store when it was empty. Learnt many a ribald song. Playing the civilian Post Office at football in the town centre We lost and they were playing in bare feet. Formed a hockey team (There were just enough of us in the unit) so that we could challange the WRAFs to a game. They agreed and we lost once more. Fantastic holiday with Ernie in East Africa. Flown over free of charge, and we stayed with a great couple on a sisal plantation who took us on Safari, watersking, nightime buffalo shoot and loads more. I was stationed in Richmond Park first waiting for our B3 training. I had to wait for 8 weeks. You can imagine the kind of 'Work' we were set to do. Lovely position but hard to settle down into Army life. We finally got onto the course. Travelling into Mill Hill. I loved every minute of it. Even the move into our new buildings. My first job was in the records office with a stint in the TA Office. I then went into the PIB unit. On to the Navy mails then promotion to Sgt and onto SO11. I Worked, after my initiall training, in the TA Office, Records Office, P.I.B Office, Navy Mails Office and finally onto SO 11 as their Sgt. I enjoyed my stay in the forces very much and met many fine people who's names are lost to me. To anybody out there who remembers me I would love to hear from you. |

Served first five years of my service, with twin brother Douglas (730) at Gunsite SO3 and SO4. Each time I returned to Mill Hill it was a joy to be re-united with Margaret Grant. Same of the dates are a bit hazy (its the age thing) but I remember visiting 54 countries in twelve and a half years mostly with Bde units. If only you could do it now. I even worked in the Directorate under Brig Drew and Yorkie Hannan. I left in 1971 to play pro-golf but a slight back injury in 1979 forced me to lay off for a bit. I joined the Prison Service in late 1979 and have been there ever since. Its better than working for a living. |
